TAFISA World Walking Day 2023: A Healthy And Active Workforce Is A Key Pillar Of The Economy Said VPM Dookun-Luchoomun

The importance of practising a regular sports activity and maintaining a healthy lifestyle was underscored by the Vice-Prime Minister (VPM), Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, yesterday, at Ebène Girls SSS, where she participated in The Association For International Sport for All (TAFISA) World Walking Day 2023, along with students and educators.

The activity, an initiative of the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation and the Mauritius Sports Council, the National Youth Council, and the Mauritius Recreation Council, will be held in other schools and colleges across the country till 15 September 2023.

Addressing the students, the VPM reiterated Government’s commitment to further sensitise the population on the importance of maintaining a sports culture in their everyday lives. She dwelt on the numerous benefits of walking and urged the youth to practise regular physical activities and to remain active and healthy for greater achievements.

A healthy and active workforce is a key pillar of the economy, she said, adding that it is important to keep oneself fit so as to deliver one’s duties efficiently. “An active and healthy lifestyle promotes a conducive environment for the mind to thrive”, she observed.

VPM Dookun-Luchoomun further pointed out that the practice of a physical activity is crucial in preventing non-communicable diseases. She appealed to the population to avail themselves of all Governmental facilities and infrastructures being put at their disposal to promote good health.

This year, TAFISA has as objectives to strive to promote peace and solidarity, bringing participants together to foster harmony, friendship, and build bridges between groups, communities and nations.
