Sixty-Year-Old Drowns In Pereybère Lagoon

Tragedy struck in the Pereybère lagoon in the early evening of Tuesday April 30. Abdool Rahim Heesambee, 67, who was swimming in the area, found himself in difficulty. He was pulled from the water and taken to a kiosk at the back of the Hibiscus Hotel. First aid was administered until an ambulance from the Service d’Aide Médicale d’Urgence (Samu) arrived. Unfortunately, the doctor on duty was only able to pronounce her dead.

At around 7pm on Wednesday evening, April 30, a team of police officers from the Grand Baie police station went to the beach in response to a request.

The victim, who lives on rue Sébastopol in Port-Louis, had gone to the beach with a friend. Inspector Veerabudren’s men found a man lying on his back, not breathing. Samu doctor Dr. J. Arasen was to pronounce him dead.

The autopsy performed by Police Medical Officer Dr Dhondea at Jeetoo Hospital on Wednesday morning attributed his death to asphyxia due to drowning.
