Mauritius Opens Its Borders And Welcomes A First Wave Of Tourists

Must Read

The Republic of Mauritius officially reopened its borders on Friday, October 1. Visitors can freely explore the beaches, mountains, waterfalls and lagoons of the island paradise upon arrival. For this first day of reopening, nearly 2,000 passengers arrived on Mauritius territory with 17 flights scheduled, including 8 departures and 9 arrivals. The first flight was from Dubai with 510 passengers on board.

AML has spared no expense for this major step towards a possible recovery of the country’s economy, which was greatly affected by Covid. The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport was particularly lively this Friday morning with the reception of the first tourists of the day. The tourists were received by singers and traditional sega dancers, as well as a guard of honor of some AML employees.

Reopening - Airport

Standing at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on Friday morning, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism Steven Obeegadoo said: “This is a great day for Mauritius and we are delighted to welcome tourists to our beautiful nation. Our global best practice strategy of vaccinating our citizens before reopening has enabled us to lift the restrictions today with confidence. Tourism is critical to our economy, but so is the safety and security of our citizens, and it is because of our world-class response to the coronavirus pandemic that we are able to reopen our borders today as planned.”

Nilen Vencadasmy, Chairman of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA), said the Mauritian hospitality industry has recently invested millions of dollars in its hotels, infrastructure and tourist attractions, including the renovation of luxury hotels, spas and wellness centers to provide vacationers and business travelers with the best accommodation and facilities.
