Goolam Khodabux, 60, was severely beaten and attacked with a saber in the middle of the day on Friday May 3 in Camp Yoloff, Port-Louis. The resident of Le Hochet, Terre-Rouge, who was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital and placed on artificial respiration, died yesterday morning. In the wake of this incident, the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) arrested seven suspects.

The savage attack took place shortly before 2 p.m. on Friday May 3. A fight broke out near the ABC traffic circle in Camp Yoloff, following an incident that had occurred a few days earlier in Camp Yoloff. Three members of a family living in Le Hochet, Terre-Rouge were attacked.

Goolam Khodabux had come by car to attack three young people on motorcycles. He was in the company of his son and another relative. He is said to have blamed them for the incident. The argument escalated into a bloody brawl. A group of friends armed with swords came to support the three youngsters.

A team of police officers from the Trou-Fanfaron police station was immediately alerted and rushed to the scene. Sergeant Chowdrynaiko and his men found a man lying on the ground at Route Abattoir, bleeding profusely from his right foot.

Although conscious, he was unable to reveal his identity or explain the attack. He was rushed to hospital, where his son came to identify him.

Goolam Khodabux underwent surgery before being admitted to hospital in a critical condition. The video images of this barbaric attack have caused a buzz on social networks.

The autopsy performed yesterday afternoon by Dr. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, head of the police forensic department, attributed the death to intracranial injuries.

The suspects arrested are Mohammad Nawfar Khodabacus, Noordinally Issa Amanoula Bacsoo, Meraj Bhageerutty, Sharad Karmally, Nadhirrr Chetty, Kenwel Marie and Neel Hossenbaccus. They were brought before the Port-Louis court on a charge of attempted murder. This charge will be changed to murder when they next appear in court.
