Two Injured In Oxygen Cylinder Explosion At Northern Hospital

Two nurses working in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at North Hospital were rushed to the Burns’ Unit at Victoria Hospital, Candos after an oxygen cylinder exploded in the ward. This happened on the afternoon of Wednesday May 8. The two injured were a 48-year-old nurse from Quartier Militaire and a 43-year-old nurse from Rivière du Rempart. The nurse’s condition is said to be worrying.

According to the statement of the room’s charge nurse, she was in the kitchen when the explosion occurred at around 1pm. She rushed to the scene of the accident, where she saw a dry powder oxygen cylinder explode.

Both nurses were treated before being transferred to Victoria Hospital’s Burns’ Unit for intensive care. The nurse was admitted to the intensive care unit, while his colleague was placed under observation.

The oxygen cylinder was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for examination. An investigation has been launched by the Criminal Investigation Division in Pamplemousses to shed light on the exact circumstances of the explosion.
