Cybercrimes: Bérenger Calls For A Select Committee

Must Read

The MMM leader faced the press this morning and talked about the Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Bill, which has being debated in the National Assembly. He said that the MMM agrees with 50% of the law. “We totally agree with tougher penalties but some sections are clearly unconstitutional. Hence, our warning that we will go to the Supreme Court! There should have been a Select Committee with parliamentarians from both sides of the House to study some of the exaggerations in the document,” he said. As the government did not consider this possibility, the panel of lawyers of the L’Espoir platform will go ahead with the challenge of the constitutionality of certain clauses of the law.

Referring to the Criminal Code (Amendment) Bill, Paul Bérenger said that India has been getting closer to Britain and the United States lately and that Indian warships are even using the Diego Garcia base. “Since the situation is blocked, I appeal to India, given its privileged relationship with Britain and the United States, to help ensure that Mauritius’ sovereignty over the Chagos is recognized,” he said.

PM shirks responsibility

Referring to the fact that the Private Notice Question of Friday was intended for the Prime Minister but that it was the Minister of Health, Dr. Kailesh Jagutpal who responded, Paul Bérenger accused Pravind Jugnauth of running away from his responsibilities. “He did not respond to the PNQ and passed it on to Jagutpal. This is cowardice, especially with passing the question to Dr. Jagutpal, who is worse than ever. In doing so, the Prime Minister ran away from his responsibilities,” he said. Paul Bérenger also denounced what he called a bungling concerning the number of people, “50 or 10“, in places of worship. For him, it is time “to stop with the repeated incompetency”.

On the appointment of Rehana Mungly-Gulbul as the Chief Justice, Paul Berenger also said that it is “a historical day”.
