Young Nurse Dies In Motorcycle Accident

After a hard day, Davin Guddappu Assirigadu, aged 29 and a nurse at the Cardiac Unit of Victoria Hospital, Candos, was about to ride home on his motorcycle. However, his motorcycle was struck head-on by the back of a truck traveling on the Phoenix Highway towards Wooton just past the Iron Bridge late Friday afternoon, November 19. The young man, who lived in Britannia, was killed instantly and an autopsy later that evening attributed his death to multiple injuries.

The accident occurred shortly after 5:30 pm. A Ford truck was traveling on the Phoenix Highway towards Camp-Fouquereaux. The driver, 38 years old and living in Cassis, was driving in the fast lane when a motorcycle collided with the back of his vehicle. An ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) was immediately called to the scene of the accident. Unfortunately, the doctor on board was to pronounce the young driver, Davin Assirigadu, a nurse at Candos Hospital, dead. At the time of the accident, the road was wet and slippery due to rain.

Both vehicles were damaged. The truck driver was given a breathalyzer test, which came back negative. After giving his statement to explain the circumstances of this accident, he was allowed to go home. This Saturday, November 20, he was presented before the Bail and Remand Court in Port-Louis. On Monday, he will appear before the court in Curepipe on the same provisional charge of manslaughter.

The body of the victim was taken to the Victoria Hospital morgue before being transferred to the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis, for an autopsy. The autopsy, performed on the evening of Friday, November 19 by Dr. Maxwell Monvoisin, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed his death to multiple injuries.

Davin Assirigadu was single and was from a family of three children, including a sister. He was educated up to HSC at SSS Mootoocoomaren Sungeelee. The young man was very dedicated to his work. His father, with a knotty voice, explains that his son was very studious and read until very late in the evening. His work, he points out, he did with love. He had been working at the Ministry of Health for almost ten years.

Davin Assirigadoo’s funeral is scheduled for this Saturday, November 20. He will be cremated in Plaine-Magnien.

The Phoenix Police have opened an investigation to shed light on the exact circumstances of this accident.
