The DPP Bids Farewell In The E-Newsletter Of His Office

Must Read

Satyajit Boolell calls for a rebalancing of the criminal justice system in 2023. In his message in the last edition of the e-newsletter of the DPP’s Office, he said that in 2023, the focus should be on rebalancing the criminal justice system in favour of most law-abiding citizens, with measures aimed at reducing recidivism, introducing more rehabilitation centres, enhancing the efficiency of the judicial process, and improving the treatment of offenders, victims and witnesses by ensuring better public protection.

Satyajit Boolell is stepping down on 31 December, more than 13 years after being appointed DPP.

According to the Senior Counsel, the rhetoric of fighting crime should not be “used as an excuse” to “trample civil liberties”.

Satyajit Boolell also highlights the changes he would have liked to see in four areas 14 years ago. He mentioned an ‘urgent’ update of the penal code and the introduction of a Police and Criminal Evidence Bill (PACE). He added that the Central Authority For Mutual Legal Assistance in criminal matters should be in the province of the DPP’s office.
