Safe Deposit Box Case – Navin Ramgoolam: I Trust My Lawyers

Must Read

In response to a question from the press yesterday about the safe deposit box case, Navin Ramgoolam said that he respects the justice system, and, above all, he trusts his lawyers. He explained that 11 cases had been initiated against him. “We have won all of them. But there was one case on appeal. I still trust my lawyers,” he said. At another point, he said his lawyers were looking into the possibility of appealing the Supreme Court ruling. “Let’s wait and see,” he said.

Asked about Kalyanee Juggoo’s departure, Navin Ramgoolam said he was sad about her departure. “But people are free to do what they want. There is no coercion in the Labour Party,” he said. He added that no one is forever. “My aim is to prepare the next generation. However, the main objective is to get this government out of office,” he said.

PTr: No deputy leader

Navin Ramgoolam declared, in a press conference yesterday, that there will be no Deputy Leader of the Labour Party for the time being! He said for a long time there was no Deputy Leader. This was until the appointment of Rashid Beebeejaun. To another question on the subject, Navin Ramgoolam said that if he had to choose a Deputy Leader, “I would have opted for myself!” However, he did not rule out the possibility of a deputy leader being appointed later. He pointed out that there was a time when he was neither a deputy leader nor even a member of the Labour Party.

Negotiations: “The MMM can never impose any conditions on the PTr”

Referring to the negotiations with the MMM and the PMSD, Navin Ramgoolam said that there was never any question of joint meetings. He explained that the three leaders had said that if the government wanted to take them by surprise and hold the municipal elections, they had to be ready. “But there was never any question of a joint meeting. We are consolidating,” he said. In response to another question, Navin Ramgoolam said the government is afraid of the Labour Party and of him. He stressed that the MMM would never be able to impose anything on the PTr… or the other way round. “Negotiations mean negotiating… not imposing,” he stressed.
