Portrait: Anoup Goodary, A fearless Young Lawyer

Who does not know Anoup Goodary? A lawyer amonsgt the Avengers, he consistently fights for the rights of the less vulnerable and works 24/ 7 round the clock. Dynamic, smart and diplomatic, Anoup Goodary is fond of Yoga. He observes a very positive and optimistic philosophy of life. Very active on Facebook, one easily comes across his live videos on important topics concerning the happenings in the country and his interaction with people on this social media platform.

Anoup Goodary is from Chemin Gaëtan-Duval, Melville, in Grand-Gaube. The Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) student ranked third on Arts Side for the Higher School Certificate exams and ranked first in Hinduism in 1998/99.

After graduation, he headed to London at South Bank University for a (BA) Honors English Studies. He took a course in pedagogy at Oxford House College, London where he was preparing to become an English language teacher like his father who is a well-known English teacher in the North. In 2007, after an LLB at the University of London, Anoup Goodary flew to Boston in the United States for training in journalism and Public Speaking at Harvard University.

Inspired by Sir Gaëtan Duval

In 2008 out of pure pleasure and want of intellectual enrichment, he enrolled in a Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) at BPP University Waterloo London. He had no idea he was going to become a lawyer.

In the meantime, the City Law School of London had accepted his application for the Bar Course as an attorney. Seizing the opportunity, he successfully passed his bar exams at his first attempt. Anoup Goodary’s career then took a different turn. In January 2012, he was sworn in to the Mauritian bar, but he then returned to London as he had a full time UK work permit until February 2016.

After spending fifteen years in central London, he finally returned home at his father’s request.

In March 2016, he decided to practice full time at the Mauritian bar. He had the chance to do his apprenticeship with Ivan Collendavelloo SC, Yousuf Mohamed SC, Antoine Domaingue SC and Rama Valayden. In his circle of close friends are Me Ravi Rutnah, Me Sanjeev Teeluckdharry, Me Dick Ng Sui Wa, Me Ashley Hurrangee and Me Neelkanth Dulloo, among others. His inspiration comes from Sir Gaëtan Duval. “I have only one painting in my house and it is a large portrait of Sir Gaëtan Duval QC, with a smiley face, full of energy, full of boldness and hope. When I have doubts in my professional or personal life, I look at his face and wonder how he would have done.
