MSM Press Conference: Opposition Targeted

Must Read

Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, Avinash Teeluck and Bobby Hurreram were at a press conference yesterday at the Sun Trust Building in Port Louis. The Minister of Social Integration and Social Security, Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo commented objectively on the report – 2022 Country Report On Human Rights Practices in Mauritius, published on 20 March 2023 by the UN Department State. There are positive findings but also remarks.   The report underlined that human rights, court decisions as well as Privy Council appeals and regional and international conventions signed by Mauritius are respected. This document also praises the fact that the country’s institutions act as watchdogs and operate freely in our country. All these are signs that democracy exists in Mauritius. Not to mention, the report also maintains that freedom of expression exists in the country. She said that: “If we do not have a democratic country, we will not have a rally in front of the court”.

Avinash Teeluck, severely denounced the attitude of Joana Berenger.  The MP used words such as ‘savage’ and ‘zako’ in Parliament which is, he reminds, an institution where the Speaker embodies respect. The minister also pointed to the attitude of Arvin Boolell. The latter has on the set of a private radio made criticisms that are not founded, concerning the Speaker. In addition, Avinash Teeluck said that the feeling is very good between the members of the government, even if there are some allegations of bribery. “We stand together,” he said. Adding that Maneesh Gobin has given the answers to the Parliament. “Let the institutions work and in the light we can react.” Before denouncing the trial by press of some journalists, with regard to allegations of bribery.

The Minister of National Infrastructure, Bobby Hurreram, recalled the scandals of the former regime, particularly when XLD was Minister of Finance. He highlighted the Nandini Soornack case and the contracts that some people benefited from under the former regime and added that XLD was aware of all these cases.

The Minister of National Infrastructures said that the opposition represents an industry of palaver and creates disarray in the hemicycle and outside the Parliament. “However, we have an enlightened people who know the difference between the effort of the government and those who like to make palaver”, said Bobby Hurreeram who spoke of several projects historic measures, initiated by the government and the Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth to recover and advance the country and also to improve the quality of life of Mauritians.
