Coromandel: Driver Killed When He Hits Parked SUV

A collision of rare violence occurred on Coromandel’s Royal Road in front of the Universal Church in the early hours of this Saturday morning, April 15. A blue Honda Fit coming from Port-Louis and heading towards Beau Bassin collided head-on with a 4 x 4 parked on the extreme left of the road with its rear lights on. This collision caused an explosion of the car’s airbag. Its driver Viswal Thodda, 45 years old and living in Avenue Belle Rose, Quatre Bornes was seriously injured. The man who was bleeding profusely from the head was evacuated to the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port-Louis where he was pronounced dead.

It was 3:20 a.m. this Saturday, April 15, a team of police officers from the Coromandel police station was called to an accident on Route Royale, Coromandel almost in front of the Universal Church. Two vehicles were involved. A Honda Fit and a white Nissan 4 x 4. The car coming from Port-Louis direction at high speed hit the 4 x 4 which was parked on the extreme left side of the road facing Beau Bassin. The 4WD was in turn thrown against a wall to its left.

Elements of the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene of the accident to extricate the two injured persons before they were transported to hospital in an ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service and a police vehicle respectively.

The 4 x 4 had stopped at this place after having torn off full force on its passage a little earlier a cabin of twenty-four batteries that serves to feed the pylon of the surveillance cameras in case of power failure. At 10 o’clock on Saturday morning, technicians working for Mauritius Telecom were at work to remove the batteries inside a pile of metal sheets of what remains of this cabin.

An autopsy was performed on the body of Viswal Thodda on the morning of Saturday, April 15, at the morgue of the Dr. Jeetoo Hospital by Maxwell Monvoisin, Principal Police Medical Officer. He attributed the man’s death to shock due to a chest wound.

On the other hand, Shaik Hassen Mohammad Ali, 57 years old and resident of Le Hochet, Terre Rouge succumbed to his injuries at 3:05 am this Saturday morning, April 15, in the Intensive Care Unit of the Dr. Jeetoo Hospital. On Saturday, April 8, the 50-year-old man was driving a Mondial motorcycle on Nicolay Road in Port-Louis near the Engen gas station when he suffered serious head injuries at around 7:15 am. He had fallen heavily after a stray dog crossed in front of his two-wheeled vehicle.

Dr. Monvoisin, who performed an autopsy on his body at the Dr. Jeetoo Hospital morgue on Saturday morning, April 15, attributed his death to craniocerebral injuries.
