Mr Marday Perianen, born at La Laura village on 01 January 2022, celebrated his 100th birthday, today, at his residence in Quatre Bornes.
An official ceremony was organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity to honour the new centenarian. On this occasion, Mr Perianen received, from the authorities, a cheque amounting to Rs 21,836; another one to the tune of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund; a bouquet; a centenarian medal; one certificate; and an ironing table.
The Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Kavydass Ramano, the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), Mrs Tania Diolle, the Deputy Mayor of Quatre Bornes, Mr Dooshiant Ramluckhun, and the close relatives of Mr Perianen were present at the event.
In his address, Minister Ramano described Mr Perianen as a joyous person who always displays good human values. He highlighted that elderly persons have a great influence on the development of the family and commended the centenarian’s children for their continuous support towards their parents. He also wished everyone present a happy new year 2022.
For her part, PPS Diolle commended the family for taking care of Mr Perianen and stressed that the centenarian has passed on great values to his children.
As for Mr Ramluckhun, he stated that it is heart-warming to celebrate the birthday of a centenarian and expressed the wish for Mr Perianen to remain healthy.
Latest statistics from the Welfare and Elderly Persons’ Protection Unit of the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity reveal that the Republic of Mauritius has recorded, as at 01 January 2022, a total of 174 centenarians from Mauritius and Rodrigues. In Mauritius, the number of female and male centenarians stands at 138 and 25 respectively while in Rodrigues, the number of centenarians recorded are nine females and two males.
Mr Perianen is the unique child of his family. His father passed away just before his birth and his mother was a labourer. He has not attended school but however has a good knowledge of Hindi and Tamil. He later worked as a labourer at Trianon Sugar Estate at the age of 12 years old and got religiously married to Soopamah Mooken, with whom he has three sons and one daughter, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Furthermore, Mr Perianen enjoys a good health, is very lucid and moves on his own with little help. He is vegetarian and has no food preferences. His longevity is due to his belief in God and to the caring nature of his relatives. During his leisure time, he likes watching television, mainly Indian movies.
