France: Legislative 2022, First Round – The Left-Wing Alliance Tied With The Presidential Coalition

Must Read

The results of the 1st round of the 2022 legislative elections are now in: the Nupes and LREM are in a tight race, with just over 25% of the vote for each political force. The National Rally is 3rd before a little less than 19%, while the Republicans just exceed 10%.

An asset for the first round of an election can become a difficulty in the second. This is the paradox that Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his partners in the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes), which brings together La France insoumise (LFI), the Socialist Party (PS), the French Communist Party (PCF) and Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV), will have to resolve. On Sunday evening, June 12, the left-wing alliance tied in the number of votes with the presidential coalition Ensemble! (25.81% of the votes against 26.10% for the Nupes). However, they will have to face an unprecedented situation: the risk of seeing a sort of cordon sanitaire, an “anti-Mélenchon front”, rising up against them.

Results

On the side of La République en Marche, it is a mixed evening: if all the ministerial candidates are qualified for the second round, some have not been placed in the lead. In addition, in some constituencies, the presidential coalition is absent from the 2nd round. Cases of figure on which LREM will position itself “on a case by case basis.” Finally, the majority is far from being acquired in the National Assembly according to the projections made.
