Former Judge Gérard Angoh Elected To The Advisory Committee Of The Human Rights Council

Transport Minister Alan Ganoo, who deputises for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the announcement at SSR Airport at midday. He announced that this week, the Mauritian government’s choice, former judge Gérard Angoh, was elected as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Human Rights Council. He received 34 votes against 30 for the Moroccan representative, Nadia Amal Bernoussi, and 28 for the Ghanaian representative, Edward Amoako Asante. Alan Ganoo explained that the Advisory Committee acts as a think-tank for the Human Rights Council. He adds that Mauritius is once again shining on the international stage. Former judge Gérard Angoh chaired the Court of Investigation into the sinking of the tug Sir Gaetan.

Justice Joseph Gérard Angoh, a former Judge of the Supreme Court of Mauritius is the Chairperson of the Board of Institute for Judicial and Legal Studies. He read Law and Economics at the university of Bournemouth, England. He was called to the Bar of England from the Honourable Society of Middle Temple’s Inn of Court in 1979. He joined the Judiciary in 1983 and has been a Magistrate of the District, Intermediate and Industrial Court, Principal State Counsel, Master and Registrar and Director of Public Prosecutions.  He has lectured Labour and Environmental Law at the university of Mauritius to LLB students. He is frequently called upon to chair disciplinary hearings and arbitrations. He has also acted as examiner in various law subjects for the Council for Vocational Legal Education and chaired the Board of Examiners for Notaries. Justice Angoh is presently the Chairperson of the Review Panel established under the Financial Intelligence and Anti-Money Laundering Act.
