A 44-year-old ploughman did not survive, following a fire that broke out in his room in Grand Bas Fond, Lallmatie during the day on Wednesday, October 6. Dheeraj Bundhoo, known as Masom who was found unconscious in his bed was rushed to the Dr. Bruno Cheong Hospital in Flacq where he was pronounced dead. The autopsy performed on his body late in the afternoon of the same day attributed his death to asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation.

It is while returning home at about 12:30 pm, this Wednesday October 6 that Dheeraj Bundhoo was discovered unconscious in his bed by his son. The latter found that a fire had broken out in the room in which his father was sleeping. He was conscious in his bed and had burns on his body.  The 40-year-old was rushed to the hospital in Flacq. Unfortunately, the doctor on duty was unable to confirm his death and referred the case to the police.

The body of Dheeraj Bundhoo was subsequently transferred to the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis at about 5:30 p.m. for an autopsy. The autopsy was performed by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer and attributed his death to asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation.

The police of Lallmatie initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of this drama.  Already everything indicates according to the investigators that the fire would have been caused in his mattress by a cigarette. The victim who had a penchant for the bottle would have accidentally dropped a lit cigarette on his mattress.

The funeral of Dheeraj Bundhoo took place this Thursday, October 7. He was cremated in Lallmatie.
