The beach of Tamarin has been cleaned; an initiative taken by Super U. On this occasion, more than fifty of the inhabitants of the village responded to the call of the group in collaboration with the Village Council of Tamarin for the cleaning of the iconic beach of the famous village on the West Coast, on Sunday, September 26. This joint initiative of Super U, Coeur Cap Tamarin, the Antoine Tsia Lip Ken Foundation and the Village Council of Tamarin stems from the commitment of the supermarket and shopping centre chain to environmental protection and sustainable development, made in early 2020.
Jean-Yves Lonflé, President of the Tamarin Village Council, Rajiv Gungadin, Asset Manager of the Super U Group, and Patricia Yue, Assistant Director of the Antoine Tsia Lip Ken Foundation, were present at the cleaning day. Each participant was given a bag to fill with garbage, and all accomplished this mission brilliantly. However, the collection of litter was not the only objective of this initiative.
As Rajiv Gungadin explains, “Picking up garbage is important, but a dirt-free beach doesn’t have to be beautiful. That’s why we also did a little development: moving pebbles, cleaning the sand, removing algae… The beach of Tamarin is a unique place in Mauritius, we must take care of it. What I remember from this day is that the commitment of the young people of Tamarin to the protection of their beautiful village is exemplary.”
In addition to cleaning the beach, the Super U group has also placed 15 brand new garbage cans in the village, under the guidelines of the Village Council. “Each bin offered is adorned with awareness messages calling on the population to respect the environment,” says Rajiv Gungadin.
