Family Dispute Escalates Into A Fight

Must Read

The barking of a dog was reportedly the trigger for an argument between members of a family in Malinga, St. Pierre, which degenerated into a bloody fight. One of the family members, a 38-year-old receiver, was injured and was admitted to the Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port Louis.

The uncle of the 30-year-old accused him of being responsible for the incidents. The victim, he says, was under the influence of alcohol and started to insult him before throwing stones towards his house. The uncle was injured on his right hand by the stones and claims that several panels of glass in his house were damaged.

On the evening of Thursday 10 March, the police in Saint-Pierre received two statements in which two members of a family accused each other. In the first complaint, made at around 8pm, a 48-year-old farmer alleged that he was assaulted by his neighbour, who is a bus driver. The neighbour happens to be his nephew, with whom he is not on good terms. These incidents, he explained, took place while he was sitting in his yard with his brother.

The neighbour, who was under the influence of alcohol, came up to him and started insulting him before he started throwing stones at him. One of the stones hit him in the right hand, while other stones damaged several panels of glass in his house.

The nephew in question gave his statement to a police officer at about 20:05 on the same day, explaining that he was at home when he heard his cousin attacking his son because of his dogs. He said he reprimanded his cousin for his behaviour. The latter was angry and attacked him on the head and feet with a club. He was injured and was taken to hospital by police officers from the Saint-Pierre police station.
