Akai Fisheries Ltd Explains Its Request To The MIC

Must Read

Recent statements regarding the financing facilities requested by Akai Fisheries Ltd from the Mauritius Investment Corporation (MIC) were made by a member of the National Assembly.

After these statements been taken up by various members of the press, the board of directors and the shareholders of the company, by means of a press release issued on Wednesday 28th July, stated that these comments are defamatory towards the Group and its directors. They reserved the right to take any measure or action deem necessary to protect the reputation, integrity and the good functioning of the business of the company.

In the same press release, the board of directors and the shareholders of the company pointed out that, first of all, the family at the head of the Group has no privileged link, political or family, neither directly nor indirectly with the government in power. They also specified that none of the companies managed by the group operate in Angus Road. They added that Akai Fisheries Ltd meets MIC’s requirements to benefit from a loan and that one of the three eligibility criteria is aimed at companies investing in a diversified portfolio of growth assets in order to generate wealth for future generations of Mauritians, as indicated on the MIC website. “Such a request is subject to a certain number of conditions, in particular legal and financial guarantees, but also commitment, such as an amount of participation in the capital of the project“, they specified. They also indicated that Akai Fisheries Ltd was indeed incorporated in January 2021 as a “Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV)”, i.e. a private entity created to invest in a specific fishing practice. As such, they concluded that this is common for international players in the world of industrial fishing.
