ACIM Wins Case: 50-Person Limit Does Not Apply To Car Rally

Must Read

The Association des Consommateurs de l’île Maurice (ACIM) will hold its car rally against the increase of fuel prices this Saturday 28 May in Port-Louis without any restriction. ACIM won its case before Justice Aruna Devi Narain in the Supreme Court on Monday 23 May. The Commissioner of Police had to back down on the number of people (maximum 50) allowed at the rally.

ACIM challenged one of the conditions imposed by the police for the organization of its rally against soaring prices, scheduled for Saturday, May 28, in Port-Louis. It has asked the police to come and justify its position. This Monday, Me Naveena Parsuramen, Principal State Counsel, who represents the Commissioner of Police in the case, requested that this condition be removed. This follows discussions with the Judge on the issue. ACIM was represented by Mes. Nawaz Dookhee, Abdool Yousouf Jan Mohamed and the solicitor, Kaviraj Bokhoree, who undertook to respect the other conditions imposed by the Police. For Jayen Chellum, the limit of 50 people does not apply to a car rally but to a group of people, who gather in a public or private place.

The major development came this Monday, May 23, 2022 before the Judge in Chambers, Aruna Devi Narain. “This is a great victory,” said ACIM Secretary General Jayen Chellum.
