He mentioned three reasons why Air Mauritius went bankrupt… even before Covid-19. They are excessive political interference, mismanagement and appointment of people who are not competent and, finally, the purchase of aircraft at exorbitant prices.
These three factors mean that today the government will take more than Rs 12 billion from the state coffers and inject it into the national airline. “For the PMSD, this is money burnt. We could have built 12,500 houses with this money,” he said.
Xavier-Luc Duval lamented that too many nominees who have no competence in the field of aviation have found themselves at the head of Air Mauritius.
He called for transparency, especially regarding public money. The PMSD leader also deplored the fact that in 17 months the administrators have not proposed any recovery plan.
Xavier-Luc Duval also mentioned the “loss of credibility” of Statistics Mauritius, especially after the episode of the report issued and taken over before being replaced by another one. For Xavier-Luc Duval, the number of unemployed has gone well beyond 100,000. “It must be between 120,000 and 150,000,” he said.
