Must Read

“Mauritius must learn to reposition itself on the international stage,” said the President of the Republic, Prithvirajsing Roopun, in his Christmas and New Year message on national television on Monday. Prithvirajsing Roopun pointed out that the country is facing a rising cost of living. He added that “we have no control over what happens on the international market” and that “inflation is caused by products that are imported” into the country. “The dollar is still dominating international trade… We have to learn to adapt and continue to take measures to help the most vulnerable and relieve wage earners,” he emphasised.

Prithvirajsing Roopun stressed that the government is working to ensure that the biopharmaceutical sector becomes a pillar of the country’s economy. He appealed to Mauritians abroad to share their know-how so as to contribute to the country’s development. He pointed out that the population must adapt to technological innovations.

He also referred to two major events that the country had experienced, notably the Indian Ocean Games held in Madagascar. Prithviraj Roopun praised the performance of our athletes, who did Mauritius proud, coming second with 91 gold medals. The other major event was the appointment by Pope Francis of the new Bishop of Port-Louis, Jean Michael Durhône, whom he described as “the Bishop of all Mauritians”.
