Must Read

Navin Ramgoolam, Xavier-Luc Duval and Paul Bérenger held their last press conference of 2023 this afternoon. They made 5 formal commitments in the event of victory in the next legislative elections. First, to restore Parliament to its former glory. This, through another Speaker. The three leaders also said they would replace the Financial Crimes Commission as soon as possible. The other commitment concerns the way appointments are made to head important bodies. Paul Bérenger explained that there will be a Constitutional Appointment’s Committee. They also promised that the old-age pension will be higher than Rs 13,500. Finally, the last commitment concerns young people. The PTr-MMM-PMSD alliance promises to give them a 10-year moratorium. Between the ages of 18 and 28, they will pay no income tax. Referring to the old-age pension measure, Navin Ramgoolam explained that “Pravind Jugnauth is desperate”. Hence his lies about the opposition alliance. “We are going to maintain the pension at over Rs 13,500. At the same time, we are going to protect this sum from inflation,” he declared. Regarding the tax moratorium for young people, Navin Ramgoolam said he and his colleagues believe in youth. “We want them to want to return to the country,” he declared.

Duval takes stock of Phokeer

In the space of a year, Sooroojdev Phokeer has carried out 35 expulsions. This was announced by Xavier-Luc Duval at a press conference. By way of comparison, in 7 years, Kailash Purryag, as Speaker, carried out just 5 expulsions. “Razack Peeroo hasn’t expelled anyone in 2 years. And Maya Hanoomanjee has carried out 5 expulsions during her term of office”, said Xavier-Luc Duval. He also pointed out that the government has built up a war chest. As for Paul Bérenger, he announced that 2024 would get off to a flying start for the PTr-MMM-PMSD alliance. The three alliance formations will be celebrating the abolition of slavery and commitment at the same time, on February 1.
