Water Industry Experts From The UK Visit Mauritius

Experts from the Climate Resilient Infrastructure Development Facility (CRIDF), a regional program supported by the UK that seeks to address long-term water concerns in Southern Africa, are being welcomed by the British High Commission Mauritius and the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities. The water sector is a top concern in small, developing island nations like Mauritius continue to experience the effects of climate change, including floods and droughts. Working closely with different actors from Mauritius’ water services, CRIDF will provide advice to Mauritius as the island tackles the challenges facing this sector.

A change in the pattern and distribution of ‘As a world-leader in public infrastructure and service delivery, the UK looks forward to supporting Mauritius as it reforms the water sector in the face of rising challenges brought on by climate change.’ With the impacts of climate change, the vulnerability of our water resources has been seriously felt over time. The arrival of CRIDF professionals that the UK hired solidifies our commitment to helping Mauritius improve water management and provision for its people remarked H.E. Charlotte Pierre, the British High Commissioner to Mauritius.

The UK Government is proud to support the Mauritian Government’s Water Sector Reform Process. During their visit, CRIDF experts met the key actors in the water sector including the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, Water Resources Unit, Central Water Authority, Irrigation Authority and Chamber of Agriculture. They gathered data and information to facilitate a master plan assessment of water resources and critical water supply infrastructure on the island. This assessment will help lay the foundation required for improving water supply access and identify opportunities to sustainably implement improvement plans.

The UK Government is proud to support the Mauritian Government’s Water Sector Reform Process. The Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, the Water Resources Unit, the Central Water Authority, the Irrigation Authority, and the Chamber of Agriculture were among the major players in the water sector that the CRIDF experts met during their visit. To facilitate a master plan assessment of the island’s vital water supply infrastructure, they gathered data and information. This assessment will help lay the foundation required for improving water supply access and identify opportunities to sustainably implement improvement plans. System analysis, lay the foundation for the development of a comprehensive, equitable and sustainable infrastructure needs assessment and an infrastructure projects planning and implementation Program.

The UK government funds CRIDF, an official Southern African Development Community (SADC) program. To promote sustainable development of the region’s water resources and address the connection between water, food, and energy, the program is demand-driven and concentrated on water services, water resource management, and water for livelihoods. CRIDF helps SADC member states build water infrastructure that is resilient to climate change and sustainable, and it supports better planning and budgeting for water infrastructure across SADC’s 13 shared watercourses.
