Abhishek Custnea and Sonia Soodon were crowned league champions and national champions in their respective categories during the third and final round of the cross country league held this Sunday, September 12 in Flic en Flac.
Never in doubt, Abhishek Custnea (senior man) of Port-Louis Racers AC and Sonia Soodon (senior woman) of Quatre-Bornes AC led the way from the start in their respective races.
Beaten by Divesh Dyal in the second stage on the same course, Abhishek Custnea built a comfortable lead after four kilometers of racing and allowed himself to manage his effort with great lucidity. “I am very proud to have been crowned for the first time in this category. I will now focus on my preparation for the 2022 season where I plan to run less than fifteen minutes over 5000m,” he said.
Abhishek Custnea was credited with a time of 27’57” for the 7, 7 km in the senior men’s race. Shaveen Dussaram of Port-Louis Racers AC and Geraldo Grimaud of Angels Reduit AC completed the podium in 28’15” and 28’28” respectively.
In the senior women’s category, Sonia Soodon also won the league-championship double with a perfect time. She recorded a time of 19’44” for the 4, 7 km. “I am very happy with this double title. It is my first title of national champion. In this year 2021 I have made a lot of progress and this is confirmed by my performances in the track races as well as in cross-country”, she said.
Tracy Flores of Port-Louis Racers AC (22’27”) and the evergreen Sabrina Rabot (24’15”) of Moka Rangers AC were also on the podium during this final.
