Monday, May 2 was marked by two cases of drowning in the south of the country. A 78 year old German woman, Monika Christa Eveline Reinhold-Mayer, drowned in the lagoon of Blue-Bay on the first day of her family vacation in Mauritius. In Mahébourg, the body of Indurma Gaungoo, also known as Konan Pareshan, aged 62, was recovered from the Baie-du-Tombeau river in Mahébourg. In both cases, the cause of death was attributed to asphyxiation due to drowning.
Police officers from Blue-Bay were called to Pointe d’Esny beach in front of the Preskil hotel at around 1pm on Monday, May 2. Monika Christa Eveline Reinhold-Mayer was lying on the beach. The septuagenarian, who was staying at the hotel, was pulled out of the water by volunteers. The personnel of an ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service (SAMU), which was called to the spot, could unfortunately only note the death of the German tourist.
She had arrived in Mauritius for vacation in the early morning hours of Monday, May 2. She was to leave the country on May 19. Her body was taken to the morgue of the Victoria Hospital in Candos for an autopsy. The autopsy was performed at around 5:00 pm on Tuesday, May 2 by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, and attributed her death to asphyxiation due to drowning. Her body was handed over to her son-in-law for repatriation.
On the other hand, the body of Indurma Gaungoo, who was wearing only an underwear, was discovered floating in the river of Baie-du-Tombeau, Mahébourg about 50 meters from the shore. He was fished out of the water at about 6:45 p.m. on Monday, May 2, by National Coast Guard personnel in Mahébourg. The autopsy was performed this Tuesday morning, May 3, by Dr. Sheila Jankee-Parsad and his death was attributed to asphyxiation due to drowning.
The funeral of Indurman Gaungoo took place this Tuesday, May 3 at 2 pm. He was cremated in Plaine-Magnien.
