Robbing Tourists : The Two Suspects Arrested And The Items Recovered

A fieldwork conducted by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Grand Bay and the Field Intelligence Office (FIO) of the Northern Division has allowed the arrest of two individuals who had been robbing tourists for some time. The arrest of Kovilen Rengasamy, alias Veeren, a 22 year old mason from Grand-Baie and Jean Darsy Donovan Romeo, a 32 year old homeless man, has allowed us to clear up at least two of these cases and to seize some of the stolen items.  The two suspects were brought before the court of Pamplemousses on Friday, November 12. They were then taken back to the police cell.

It was during a police operation mounted in the late afternoon of Thursday, November 11 that a team of CID composed of Constables Adhin, Lallchandm Jayram, Ramdeen and policewoman Philippe and led by Inspector Thakoor and Sergeant Doorbeejun, under the supervision of Assistant Superintendent of Police Riaz Ahmad Jumun have proceeded to the arrest of these suspects. This was done with the assistance of two FIO police officers, namely Chinien and Gowsee.

Kovilen Rengasamy confessed to be the author of a robbery with violence committed on a 23 years old Ivorian student. The latter was leaving a bar in the early hours of Sunday, November 7, when he was attacked with a bottle to the head before being robbed.  During a search of the suspect’s home, no stolen items were found. However, Kovilen Rengasamy returned a Festina watch worth Rs 16,800 that was in his possession.  That day, he also stole an Iphone 11, a wallet containing Rs 7000, an international driving license, an Ivorian identity card, a bank card and a student card from a private university in Mauritius.

Donovan Roméo confessed his participation in a robbery case against a 27 year old British national. He had attacked this woman who was walking in the company of another British woman on the Coastal Road of Grand-Baie. It was on the evening of Sunday, November 7. He had robbed this woman of her bag containing an Iphone 13 Pro Max, the sum of Rs 6000 and a Monzo Bank card belonging to her friend. The whole is estimated at 1254 pounds sterling (Rs 71 478).

The CID of Grand Bay is investigating other cases of theft of which tourists have been victims.
