The Minister of Tourism, currently Acting Prime Minister, held a press conference yesterday morning at Hotel Le Victoria, Pointe aux Piments. Steven Obeegadoo explained that, over the last three months, Mauritius’ performance in its main European markets is comparable to that before the pandemic. “Over the last three months, we are at almost 100% of the pre-Covid figures on the French, German and British markets, which represent 40% of our arrivals,” says Steven Obeegadoo.

He added that Mauritius is experiencing “an extraordinary year with everyone helping out”. He stated that “we can end the year being well satisfied with what we have achieved”. Steven Obeegadoo also explained that there were several challenges to overcome since the opening of the borders in October 2021.

Acting Prime Minister Obeegadoo moreover emphasised on the necessity to consolidate existing key markets such as the United Kingdom, France and Germany, and enhancing the country’s air connectivity through concerted actions of both the public and private sectors.

He thus spoke of measures implemented to encourage tourists from Reunion Island to visit Mauritius, including: travelling to Mauritius from Reunion Island without passport since 19 September 2022; and resumption of flights from Pierrefonds. He also highlighted that flights to Rodrigues Island have been resumed.
