Released in theaters on March 23, The Blue Penny is the first feature film of director Jon Rabaud. 100% Mauritian, this is Jon’s 10th film and he doesn’t intend to stop there.
The Blue Penny is a thriller, which takes place in one evening and in one place. Director Jon Rabaud got the idea for the plot during the first lockdown of 2020: “I got the inspiration during the first lockdown. I briefly jotted down the idea before working seriously on the script. I then presented it to some friends who really liked it. That’s what encouraged me to go ahead with the project.”
With the excitement the film has generated, Jon Rabaud wants to take the film abroad: “This is one of our priorities, We intend to have the film played in international theaters. We also want to present it in festivals.”
Moreover, if thrillers interest him a lot, the director wishes to touch other cinematographic genres: “I have a penchant for the world of thrillers. It is a genre in which I am perfectly at ease. But, I’m looking forward to doing other things as well.”
The Blue Penny – Synopsis
Harry Theodore (Robert Furlong) is a wealthy and successful businessman. Married with three children, he celebrates the civil marriage of his youngest daughter, Marie (Rachel de Spéville). Both father and daughter are passionate about stamp collecting, so Harry gives Marie a ‘Blue Penny’ as a wedding gift. The ‘Blue Penny’ is a Mauritian stamp dating from the 19th century and is one of the rarest and most coveted stamps in the world.
The event takes an unexpected turn when Edward (Guillaume Silavant), the eldest son, arrives with Anna (Vinaya Sungkur), his new girlfriend, who happens to be Harry’s former mistress. During this evening, family resentments and unmentionable secrets come to upset each other while in the shadow a terrible revenge is preparing.
