A 59-year-old woman, living in St. Joseph, Terre Rouge was seriously injured in a traffic accident that occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, April 27 on the Royal Road in Terre Rouge near a traffic light. She was struck by an oncoming van while crossing behind a stopped vehicle. The 50-year-old was admitted to a ward in the Intensive Care Unit of the North Hospital and placed on artificial respiration. Her condition is considered critical.
It was shortly before 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 27 that this accident occurred. A cargo van was driving on the Royal Road in Terre-Rouge. It was coming from the direction of Port-Louis and heading towards Khoyratty. The traffic light was green, giving priority to vehicles coming from both directions.
At one point a car was stopped and was waiting for the lane to be cleared to turn right and head towards Terre-Rouge. At the same time, the 50-year-old woman had to cross behind this car. She was hit head-on by the oncoming van. The van was driven by a 31-year-old mechanic from Camp Fouquereaux, Phoenix. He was given a breathalyzer test which was negative. Footage of this accident was captured by Safe City cameras.
