It was at the Alcatraz detention center at the Central Barracks that France Désiré Mervin Rody Venkatasami, 40, spent his first night on Wednesday, September 22, after his arrest. The resident of Ward IV, Port Louis was arrested on a provisional charge of involuntary wounds and blows by negligence under Section 239 of the Penal Code and the Animal Welfare Act. This was after his two rottweilers savagely attacked a 43-year-old listener at Rue Mère Barthélémy, Port-Louis on the evening of Saturday, September 18. As the police objected to the release in the Port-Louis court on Thursday, September 23, Rody Venkatasami was taken back into custody at Alcatraz.
On the evening of Saturday, September 18, this listener was on his way to a store owned by Rody Venkatasami when he was attacked by the two males owned by him. He vainly called for help. Seriously injured, after the two dogs left him on the asphalt, he managed to get to the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis for treatment. Immediately the police station was alerted to this case.
The attack of this man has caused great indignation throughout the country, especially since it is not the first time that dogs running loose attack passers-by. If the owner who was wanted since Monday was apprehended, on the other hand his two dogs are not found. They would have been disposed of elsewhere. Bitten on the feet and on both hands, the forty-year-old could lose the use of his right hand. His relatives have chosen to have him admitted to the Fortis Darné clinic in Floréal where he will have to undergo further surgery.
