Must Read

When one becomes 14. This morning, a first local case of contamination was recorded in Rodrigues. And in the early afternoon, the island’s health commission announced that 14 local cases have been recorded after a series of tests. So far, since the beginning of the pandemic, Rodrigues had recorded 16 imported cases. Schools will remain closed in Rodrigues until 4 February.

There is fear across the island. A first local case of Covid-19 contamination has been detected in Rodrigues. A 37-year-old woman, who had not travelled, was tested positive. She was admitted to Creve Coeur Hospital. The news spread very rapidly across the island. People who have been in direct contact with the thirty-year-old are not hiding their concerns. Some even want the health protocol to be revised. The High-Powered Committee of Rodrigues held an emergency meeting this morning, Thursday 27 January, to review the health situation on the island. The question of the organisation of the regional elections scheduled for 13 February will also be discussed. Schools are closed on the island this Thursday and Friday.

The infected woman is an inhabitant of Grand la Fouche-Mangues. A screening exercise has been initiated as soon as it was announced that a first local case of coronavirus has been recorded in the island. As a result, all schools remain closed in Rodrigues. As soon as this news was announced, the people of Rodrigues stormed the only pharmacy on the island in Port Mathurin to buy surgical masks, medicines and hydroalcoholic gel among others.

This morning, Commissioner Fanchette Gaspard Pierre-Louis appealed to the inhabitants to limit their movements in order to avoid the spread of the virus, in a statement to the national radio this morning.
