The political situation, the covid are the main topics discussed on Saturday, by MSM President (also Minister of Public Utilities), Joe Lesjongard, and Minister of National Infrastructures, Bobby Hurreeram.

Speaking about the fight against Covid-19 in our country, the MSM president maintained that the health situation is still serious in the country and deplored the fact that some of our compatriots have lost their lives in the fight.

However, he said that there are signs of improvement. To justify his words, Joe Lesjongard stressed that the vaccination campaign continues and said he was satisfied that the population has become aware of the importance of vaccination.

Joe Lesjongard also made it clear that the measures taken by the government to combat the Covid-19 pandemic have borne fruit.

Freedom of expression

The MSM president also strongly condemned the attitude and statements of some who say that freedom of expression does not exist under this government. Emphasizing the country’s Constitution, he pointed out that some of those who demonstrated claimed that they will alert international opinion about freedom of expression in Mauritius. At no time have we muzzled freedom of expression in our country. Our strength is the stability, the respect of the opponent, the democratic game which is alive and which exists in Mauritius. We must respect the government’s 5-year mandate and then the people will decide,” he maintained.

Government projects

For his part, Bobby Hurreeram particularly expressed his opinion on the Road Decongestion Programme concerning the realization of several projects, including fly overs – Dowlut, Phoenix – and new roads, which will decongest the roads and improve the level of traffic in several parts of the country. He thanked all those who have fully collaborated with the authorities concerned for the realization of road networks in Mauritius.

Bobby Hurreeram also recalled that the government has injected a sum of Rs 28 billion to ease the burden of Mauritians by introducing the Wage Assistance Scheme, Self Employed Scheme, among others to help the tourism industry to take off again. In addition, the government has provided subsidies of Rs 500 million to help consumers.

Before concluding the press conference, Joe Lesjongard and Bobby Hurreram wished a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2022 to all Mauritians.
