106 Deaths On Our Roads Since January

To date, the road has claimed 106 victims against 126 in the same period, that is to say on December 18, 2020. This Friday, December 17, two deaths were recorded on our roads. The first victim is Divakar Dutt Ramyead, a 77-year-old Curepipian, who was killed while driving his car on the Royal Road, Alma. His car, a Toyota Axio, collided with an oncoming bus. On the same day, Constable Omprakash Seetaram, who was to celebrate his 55th birthday on Sunday, December 26, was killed while driving home in L’aventure. He fell off his motorcycle after it skidded on the Royal Road in L’Amitié, Rivière du Rempart.

The officer was returning home from his second shift at the Northern Divisional Supporting Unit. It was around 11:45 pm on the evening of Friday, December 17, that police officers from the Piton police station went to the scene of the accident following a request. The motorcycle of the brand Jialing would have skidded while he was driving in the direction of Mon Loisir. The injured man was evacuated to the northern hospital by his colleagues. On the way, he was taken in charge by the personnel of an ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) and the doctor on board found that he had already died.

Road Accident

An autopsy performed on his body this Saturday morning, December 18, by Dr. Maxwell Monvoisin, Principal Police Medical Office at the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jetoo Hospital, Port-Louis, attributed his death to a craniocerebral trauma.

As for the terrible accident in which Divakar Dutt Ramyead lost his life, it took place around 11:40 am on Friday, December 17. A resident of Camp de Masque, who witnessed the tragedy, said that the car of this septuagenarian came from Verdun and was driving in the direction of Quartier-Militaire. At one point, the Toyota Axio passed a line of cars at high speed. It then collided with an oncoming bus.

Road Accident

The impact was so severe that the car was thrown off the road. The vehicles were severely damaged and the Toyota Axio was reduced to a pile of scrap metal. It took the intervention of the fire department to extricate Divakar Dutt Ramyead from the remaining vehicle. A doctor of the SAMU could only note the death of this driver.

Three people were injured on board the bus. The driver, a 59 year old man living in St Julien d’Hotman, was admitted to the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis. His condition is considered serious. A 29 year old woman and her seven month old baby, who live in Mont Ida, were treated at the Dr. Bruno Cheong Hospital in Flacq and later returned home.

Road Accident

The 70 year old bus driver, who lives in Providence, Military District, was given a breathalyzer test, which was negative. The body of Divakar Dutt Ramyead was taken to the Victoria Hospital Candos morgue for an autopsy early this evening. The autopsy performed by Dr. Dhondeea, Police Medical Officer attributed the death to multiple injuries.

The bus driver was released on parole after giving his statement at the Quartier-Militaire police station.
