This is the statement of a 51-year-old mason living in Quatre Garreaux, Eau-Coulée after police officers discovered an arsenal of firearms at his home early Friday morning, June 3. The fifty-year-old man does not have a firearms permit.
It is on the basis of certain information that this man has in his possession firearms that a raid was carried out at his home this Friday June 3 at 5:30 am. This police operation was mounted under the supervision of Superintendent of Police, Mahendradeosingh Surnam, head of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Central Division. Police officers from the Eau-Coulée CID, led by Sergeant Dulmeer, the Eau-Coulée Police Station, led by Inspector Teelhawood, the Divisional Supporting Unit, the Special Mobile Force and a sniffer dog raided the bricklayer’s house.
The bricklayer was informed of the suspicions against him. He led the police to his room where he removed a large metal box, which was locked. He had to remove a total of nine other boxes inside. In which, there were eight revolvers of different brands, a tablet gun, a crossbow and a box containing a certain amount of lead bullets.
Confronted with these exhibits, the 50-year-old, who does not hold a gun permit, had to declare, “Missie monn aste sa dan la Suisse, mo finn rest laba pendant trez zan ek lane 2013 kan monn vinn Moris, monn amenn sa avek mwa”.
He was arrested on a charge of possession of firearms without a license. On the same day, he was brought before the court in Curepipe on this provisional charge. As the police did not object to his release, he paid a bail of Rs 11,150 and an IOU to that effect. His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, November 9.
The firearms were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Reduit for examination.
