Fifty grams of synthetic drugs were allegedly found at the home of Akil Bissessur’s partner in Palma, Four Corners on the evening of Friday 19 August. The woman, Sweety Moheeputh, and lawyer Akil Bissessur were arrested on a provisional charge of drug trafficking. It was at around 11pm that a heavy handed operation was carried out in Palma, Four Corners by the Special Striking Team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police, Ashik Jagai. The police used maximum force to storm the house.
The raid was captured live on Facebook by the lawyer and his partner. The police broke glass panels to force their way inside. The house was left in an indescribable mess after the search. ASP Jagai’s men reportedly had information that lawyer Akil Bissessur was involved in drug trafficking. The mother of his companion, a woman in her seventies, was shocked by the presence of these policemen, whom she saw turning her house upside down.
After this raid, the police officers went to the lawyer’s home for another search in Sodnac, Quatre-Bornes. A panel of lawyers including Sanjeev Teeluckdharry, Anoup Goodary and Rouben Mooroongapillay went to the Central Barracks to meet Akil Bissessur. It was only at around 5am on Saturday morning, 20 August, that they were able to see him.
Akil Bissessur was taken to the Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port Louis for treatment. He was reportedly roughed up during the police raid in Palma, Quatre-Bornes. It is expected that he and Sweety Moheeputh will be arraigned before the Bail and Remand Court (BRC) this Saturday morning, 20 August.
It should be noted that Darren the activist, whose real name is Dominique Seedeeal, was arrested outside the Central Barracks this Saturday morning. This was for making a live video in which he denounced the method used by ASP Jagai.
