Inmate Assaults Police Officer After Learning He Will Not Be Released

A police officer assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Quartier-Militaire was given two days sick leave after he was assaulted in the Moka court. He was escorting a detainee to court for a case of theft of copper cables from the former CMT factory in Montagne-Blanche.  After learning that the police would object to his release on parole, the detainee attacked the police officer who was escorting him. The police officer was injured and bleeding on the left side of his face. The suspect, Arnaud Sylvain Chuttoo, a 27 year old handy worker and resident of Circonstance, St-Pierre was taken back to the police cell at the detention center of Moka.

It was around 12:00 noon on Monday, November 15, that this incident occurred in the court of Moka. The 31-year-old police officer was escorting Sylvain Chuttoo to the court to answer a provisional charge of theft after a complaint of theft was made against him at the Montagne-Blanche police station that same day.

The suspect changed his behavior after learning that he could not be released because the police intended to object.  Vexed, he had to question the police officer who was escorting him, “ki fer zot ine mett obzeksyon” before inflicting a violent elbow to the left side of the officer’s face, which caused bleeding.

Sylvain Chuttoo, Krishna Sunyasi, 27 years old and resident of Circonstance, St-Pierre and Steward Ravaton, 30 years old and resident of Quartier-Militaire, were arrested during the day of Sunday, October 14 for the same case. The same day, they were brought before the Bail and Remand Court (BRC) in Port-Louis. It was during their new appearance at the Moka Court on Monday, November 15, that the suspect Sylvain Chuttoo assaulted a police officer.

Afterwards, the police officer went to the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port-Louis for treatment. Jeetoo Hospital in Port-Louis to receive treatment. The doctor on duty granted him two days of sick leave.
