The official flag raising ceremony for the 55th anniversary of the independence of Mauritius took place in the early afternoon in Port Mathurin in the presence of His Excellency Marie Cyril Eddy Boissézon, G.O.S.K, the guest of honor on this occasion, as well as the Chief Commissioner, Johnson Roussety, G.O.S.K, the Deputy Chief Commissioner, the President of the Regional Assembly, members of the regional government and elected officials, among others.
In his speech, the Chief Commissioner, said that the Republic and Independence Day is a proud moment, where all components of the multiracial and geographical republic come together to celebrate Mauritian patriotism. “It is a day that we celebrate with respect and pride in Rodrigues,” he said. The chief commissioner added that during the last 12 months, the new team at the head of the regional government seeks to revitalize the morale of the population to boost economic activities in the island. He welcomed the number of tourist arrivals. He recalled that since March 2022, the RRA has set out the main lines of sustainable development and that the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations are at the center of all actions and projects of local government.
Johnson Roussety recalled that he launched the concept of Integrated Water Resource Management and the establishment of a Water Steering Committee. He also mentioned the holding of the Water Conferences and said that by the end of his mandate, “tangible results will be achieved, especially in the provision of water to Rodriguans. He asks the population to have confidence in the regional government and in himself.
For his part, the Vice-President of the Republic said that in 1968, “very few people believed in the resilience of Mauritius. But since then, “with the commitment of Mauritians, the country has seen developments, whether in manufacturing, tourism or the blue economy.
Vice President Eddy Boissézon said that since the accession of Rodrigues to the status of autonomy, the development is palpable. He emphasized the discipline of the Rodriguans and reassured that the central government is fully committed to support the development of Rodrigues and to work together for the success of autonomy.
