A sum of Rs 5700 in various denominations and coins were found in the possession of Zaahiraa Bibi Fokeer, née Dushmahomud, 43 years old on the afternoon of Friday March 15 in Vacoas. This was after she was stopped by a 39-year-old Midlands contractor who suspected that the documents she had in her possession to make the collection were false. After attempting to flee and being arrested by a police officer, this Vallée Pitot resident declared, “donn mwa ene sans, bann dokiman la falsifye sa”. This is not the first time Zaahiraa Fokeer has been arrested for this offence.
The complainant was near the Regent building on Route Saint Paul, Vacoas, at around 3 p.m. when he caught the woman collecting money. He said he went to her to check the documents bearing the date April 28, 2024 and the signature of an officer from police headquarters, which were in her possession and which he suspected were forgeries. As he engaged the woman in conversation, she ran off in the direction of a policeman at the Savoy junction. Running in the direction of the bus station, she had arrived in front of the MCB when she was stopped by this policeman. The Midlands resident asked the policeman to check the woman’s documents. She then declared, “donn mwa ene sans, bann dokiman la falsifye sa”.
Voluntarily, Zaahiraa Fokeer had to hand over to the policeman several denominations and coins from her purse. She had a total of Rs 5700, which was seized by a policewoman. The suspect was taken to the police station and, after giving her statement, was taken into custody at the Vacoas police station. On Saturday March 16, she was brought before the Bail and Remand Court in Port-Louis. She is facing a provisional charge of “Unlawful public collection”.
