FAREI Security Guard Arrested For Hemp Theft

An investigation was initiated by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Moka on a case of theft of three hemp plants measuring two meters high at the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (FAREI) of Réduit. The case led to the arrest of a security guard posted at the Crop Research Station (CRS) on Friday, January 6. Gilles Dundee, 25 years old and living in one of the apartments of the NHDC in Upper Dagotière confessed to have stolen only two hemp plants and to have removed its leaves. He said he sold them to an unknown person in Sainte Croix for the sum of Rs 1500.

In the afternoon of Wednesday, January 4, the Senior Research Support Officer of FAREI made a statement for the theft of three hemp plants at the police station of Moka. In his complaint, this Beaubassinois explained that there is a CRS in Réduit with hemp plants (medicinal cannabis). This station, he specified, is fenced on four sides and surrounded with an electric metallic fence. This place he supported is placed under surveillance cameras 24 hours a day.

It is during a round in this station around 7:30 am on Wednesday, January 4 in company of an Irrigation Pump Operator in the enclosure of the station, that he discovered three stalks of hemp without their leaves were out of the fence of this station.

During the day of Friday, January 6, a police officer from the CID of Moka and a police computer technician went to the FAREI to view the surveillance camera images. The individual who broke into the station was identified by a researcher as security guard Gilles Dundee. He was subsequently arrested by a team from the Moka CID led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Ranjit Jheengut.

Under close interrogation, the suspect confessed to the charges against him. However, he said he only stole plants. After removing the leaves, he sold them to an individual in Sainte-Crox for the sum of Rs 1500. This money he has already spent.

Gilles Dundee was brought before the court of Moka this Saturday morning, January 7. He is accused of stealing hemp plants.
