Must Read

Placed under artificial respiration in the intensive care unit of the North Hospital since Saturday, September 17, Somduth Khaytoo, a 52-year-old driver’s aide, succumbed to his injuries this Friday morning, September 30. This fifty-year-old had been assaulted by his son, a 27-year-old drug addict, on Wednesday September 14. The latter, Karan Khaytoo, 29 years old, who is registered as a notorious recidivist, was arrested this Friday, September 30 by police officers of the Goodlands police station.

This case was brought to the attention of the police in the late afternoon of Sunday, September 18. A policewoman had brought a case of serious assault on behalf of Kushal Khaytoo, a 22-year-old security guard. The latter, a resident of Roche-Terre, explained that his father was taken to the North Hospital around 3:30 pm on Saturday, September 17 by his maternal grandmother. This was because he had been assaulted by his brother Karan Khaytoo. His father, he said in the statement, had wounds on his face, head and all over his body.

After receiving treatment, his father was admitted to the intensive care unit. His condition was considered critical. The 50-year-old underwent surgery and was placed on life support.

Kushal Khaytoo said in his statement that he had talked to his father on the phone on Wednesday, September 14, and that he had heard him arguing with his brother and that he was also complaining that his brother was assaulting him. The young brother insisted that it was not the first time that his father was beaten by his brother when he demanded money to be able to afford his drug dose.

Somduth Khaytoo had been separated from his wife for years. He lived on the first floor of his house and his son Karan Khaytoo lived upstairs in the house. After his death, his body was taken to the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis for an autopsy. The autopsy, performed by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed the death to an intracranial hemorrhage.

The investigation in this case is being conducted by the Chief Inspector, Jaggarsingh Foeud of the Goodlands Police Station, under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sunil Nucchedy.

Karan Khaytoo, who was arrested on Friday 30 September, was taken into custody. This Saturday morning, October 01, he will be brought before the Bail and Remand Court (BRC) in Port Louis where he will face a provisional charge of murder.
