Must Read

Farad Mamade Dilmohamed, 53, did not survive his attack on the evening of Wednesday January 10 at the Vallée Pitot police station where he was being held. He was savagely attacked by a fellow inmate, Jean Paul Ravina, aged 24. Ravina was arrested for possession of offensive weapons, while Farad Dilmohamed, a resident of rue Inkerman, was charged with theft of jewelry worth Rs 135,000 following a statement by his wife on Friday December 29. The autopsy took place yesterday morning at Jeetoo Hospital.

Farad Dilmohamed was attacked at around 6 p.m. in the early evening of Wednesday January 10. Sergeant Jogoo, assigned to the Vallée Pitot police station, described the circumstances of the attack in a statement made the same evening. The suspect, Jean Paul Ravina, was returning to his cell from the toilets. He was to attack Farad Dilmohamed violently. Constable Poonye intervened to separate the two inmates. Farad Dilmohamed complained of pain and was taken to Dr Jeetoo Hospital. After a medical examination, the police took him back to his cell at the Vallée Pitot station at around 8.50pm.

Jean Paul Ravina was arrested in Baie du Tombeau in possession of a sword and a “sinoi” knife and taken to the Vallée Pitot police station on the afternoon of Wednesday January 10.

At around 10 p.m., Constable Poonye found Farad Dilmohamed unconscious. As his state of health appeared worrying, an ambulance from the Service d’Aide Médicale d’Urgence (Samu) was called to take him back to hospital. Unfortunately, the doctor on duty was only able to pronounce him dead.

Jean-Paul Ravina has been indicted and provisionally charged with murder.
