Covid 19 : A First Death Of A 16 Year Old

Must Read

We are facing a rejuvenation of the deaths due to Covid 19. Mauritius records its first teenage victim of the virus.

He was only 16 years old, had no co-morbidities, was double vaccinated with Pfizer but had to be put on artificial respiration. The teenager, Mohamed Jibran Chataroo, a resident of Plaine Verte, has passed away on Saturday morning at the New ENT Hospital in Vacoas. His condition deteriorated rapidly. The Form V student at Sir Abdool Razack Mohammed, who was due to sit for the School Certificate examinations in November, did not attend his classes on Monday 7 February and Tuesday 8 February. He later tested positive for Covid 19.

The ENT hospital has not yet given its report on the young patient. However, there are still concerns about his contamination, the factors that led to his urgent hospitalisation when he had no particular health conditions, the need to put him on life support and his death.

Rodrigues: More than 10% of the population infected

The figures for this Saturday in Mauritius remain unknown. But in Rodrigues, the situation is getting worse. In a fortnight and on approximately 42 000 inhabitants, 5358 people are contaminated, that is to say 359 new cases on this Saturday. The Ministry of Health has announced that it is sending a shipment of medicines and medical equipment via the Dornier helicopter this weekend and that a medical team of doctors and nurses will be arriving on the island to support the hospitals and the Domiciliary Monitoring Unit. Rodrigues currently has 22 hospitalizations at the Mont Lubin Health Centre.

The progression is considered alarming and the population as well as the political parties are asking for a general lock down of 15 days to better contain and manage the contaminations. The population believes that the government should lead them to better fulfil their civic rights by postponing the elections to a later date, a time when the pandemic will show a lull.
