Artemis Curepipe Hospital Unveils Its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Must Read

To provide holistic care for premature newborns as well as critically ill babies requiring intensive care, Artemis Curepipe Hospital has designed its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Operational since November 2023, the unit boasts a highly qualified medical and paramedical team led by Dr Radhika Jagatsingh, a pioneer of neonatal resuscitation in Mauritius. Located on the second floor, adjacent to the maternity ward, neonatology unit and nursery, it can accommodate up to 4 babies.

Thanks to this unit, the medical establishment, which is part of the Falcon Healthcare group, is able to offer continuous, multidisciplinary care to pregnant women and their babies, from the moment the pregnancy is announced through to delivery. Seriously ill newborns are rapidly taken into care. This is a considerable advantage.

The NICU works closely with the maternity unit, particularly in the case of high-risk pregnancies, which often involve possible complications for the infant. The NICU team at Artemis Curepipe Hospital, made up of doctors, nurses and specialized carers, is ready to intervene at any time, day or night. “In addition to providing medical care for infants, the nursing team plays an essential role in supporting families. In fact, our professionals have been trained to support and accompany parents during their children’s hospitalization. We are always available to answer their questions and address their concerns, aware that this is a difficult time for them.

“Parents, wherever possible, are allowed to stay with their child 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and are encouraged to participate in the care provided. This allows them to forge a strong bond with their newborn,” explains Dr. Radhika Jagatsingh.

“By providing specialized care for critically ill newborns, the NICU strengthens our ability to address a number of healthcare challenges. It underscores our commitment to providing the community with comprehensive, quality and affordable healthcare services. The opening of this state-of-the-art unit is an important step in the implementation of our strategy, which aims to position Artemis Curepipe as a center of excellence by demonstrating our commitment to providing holistic patient care, from the very first days of life,” explains Dr. Ashish Sharma, Group Head of Strategy and Development.

The NICU has been designed to provide a calm, comforting environment for newborns by limiting noise and brightness. Staff also stay by the family’s side after their child has left the NICU, providing advice and guidance to ensure their child’s well-being when they return home. The experience and expertise of the professionals are invaluable, and position Artemis Curepipe Hospital as a leading institution for neonatal medicine in Mauritius.
