Argentina, Chile, Uruguay And Paraguay Bid To Jointly Host 2030 FIFA WC

Must Read

Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay have submitted a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup – the beautiful game’s centenary edition. Uruguay had hosted the first World Cup in 1930, it was then called the Jules Rimet trophy. They say it is their dream to bring the centenary edition back ‘home’.

“This is the dream of a continent,” said Alejandro Dominguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL). European (UEFA) nations Spain and Portugal too have made a joint bid to host the centenary edition of the World Cup.

Uruguay overcame Argentina in the final to win the inaugural Jules Rimet trophy (World Cup) in 1930. Dominguez was speaking at the place where the victory took place – Uruguayan capital Montevideo’s Centenario Stadium.

“There will be more World Cups, but the cup only turns 100 one time, and it needs to come home,” added Dominguez.

Chile were hosts in 1962, while Argentina saw the world’s greatest spectacle take place on their soil in 1978. “It’s right for the World Cup to be hosted where it all began, 100 years later,” said Ignacio Alonso, president of the Uruguayan Football Association.

Qatar will play host to the 2022 World Cup, while Canada, Mexico and the USA have been granted rights for the World Cup in 2026. FIFA will pick the 2030 World Cup hosts in the year 2024.
