Acting WHO Representative In Mauritius Calls On The Prime Minister

The Acting World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Mauritius, Dr Indrajit Hazarika, paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, this afternoon, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.

In a statement after the meeting, Dr Hazarika stated that this is his first mission in Mauritius in his capacity as Acting WHO Representative. He recalled that Mauritius and the WHO have a long history of partnership adding that the COVID-19 pandemic has enabled them to build on lessons of the COVID-19 experience and how to be more prepared.

Speaking about the vaccination programme against COVID-19, Dr Hazarika observed that Mauritius is among the first countries in Africa to start vaccination of children aged between 05 to 11 years. He indicated that the vaccination rate among children in the country is picking up. He further lauded Mauritius for having used vaccination as a tool to protect its population and open up its economy.

Furthermore, he stated that discussions with the Prime Minister focused on the strengthening of the health components of the disease burden in Mauritius, in particular the preventive aspects.
