Young Woman Killed In Front Of Her Boyfriend

Tania Calice, 23 years old, was brutally killed in the evening of this Wednesday, February 16th. The young woman and her boyfriend were standing behind their vehicle, a broken down 4 x 4 on Route Royale in Alma, Quartier-Militaire, when she was hit by a rental van. She was seriously injured and an ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) was called to the scene. Unfortunately, the doctor on board was only able to confirm the death of Tania Calice. The driver of the van, 35 years old and living in Saint Julien d’Hotman, was arrested.

It was around 11:05 p.m. on the evening of Wednesday, February 16 when a team of police officers from the Quartier-Militaire police station responded to a request for assistance where a young woman had been struck head-on by a van on Route Royale in Alma.

Road Accident

The victim, Tania Calice, a resident of Balaclava, was in the company of her friend, Sheldon Nayadoo, 25 years old and resident of Les Salines, Port-Louis. Both were standing behind their vehicle, a 4 x 4, which had broken down. The 4 x 4 was coming from Quartier-Militaire and was heading towards Saint-Pierre. The van, which was driving in the same direction, hit Tania Calice, who was standing behind the 4 x 4 on this road.

After her death was noted by the doctor of the SAMU, her body was transported to the morgue of the hospital Dr. Bruno Cheong in Flacq before being transferred to that of Dr. A.G. Jeetoo in Port-Louis. The autopsy performed this Thursday, February 17 by Drs. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin and Prem Chamane, respectively head of the forensic department of the police and Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed his death to multiple injuries.

The drivers of both vehicles were given a breathalyzer test that came back negative. The driver of the contract van was taken into custody in a cell at the Quartier-Militaire police station. This Thursday, February 17, he was brought before the court of Moka on a provisional charge of manslaughter. He was later released on parole.
