Young Police Officer Dies In Road Accident

One hundred the number of deaths on our roads so far this year. Lavshik Anand Roopnah, a 22-year-old policeman was added to this black list in the early hours of Monday morning, December 6. A grey Toyota driven by the young policeman hit a red Renault Megan that was parked on the left side of the Royal Road in Bramsthan. The impact was so violent that the Renault Megan was propelled into the middle of the road. Lavshik Anand Roopnah, who lived in Camp Ithier, was killed instantly. He had only 2 years of service in the police force.

It was 12:01 a.m. on Monday morning, December 6. A team of police officers from the police station of Flacq led by Sergeant Judoo had arrived at the scene of the accident. This one involved two cars. The policeman Lavshik Roopnah is stuck behind the wheel of his car. The car stopped where the Renault Megan was parked.

The doctor on board an ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service unfortunately had to note the death of this policeman who worked at the police station of Rivière Sèche. It was the firemen of the Flacq station who extracted the deceased driver from his car. The body was then transported to the morgue of the Dr. Bruno Cheong Hospital in Flacq, before being transferred to the morgue of Dr. A.G. Jeetoo in Port-Louis for an autopsy. The autopsy, performed by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed the death to multiple injuries.

The driver of the Renault Megan, a 44-year-old Tour Operator living in the village of Flacq explained to the police that he was at a friend’s house when he heard a loud noise. Immediately he went out on this road and there he saw his car which was delaced and the other vehicle almost in the same place where he parked earlier. His car was only slightly damaged, but the young policeman’s car was seriously damaged.

At Roopnah’s home at Route Royale Camp Ithier there is consternation. Since the morning of December 6, relatives, friends and acquaintances have flocked to offer their sympathy to his parents. Lavshik Roopnah who had injured his foot, was on sick leave for three weeks. He was expected to return to work next week.

The Tour Operator was submitted to a breathalyzer test, which was negative.  He will be arraigned in Flacq court this Monday. He is facing a provisional charge of manslaughter.

An investigation has been initiated at the police station of Flacq to determine the exact circumstances of this accident.
