US President Joe Biden Mixes Humor And Seriousness At Correspondents’ Gala

Must Read

The president and the jokes are back and the masks are off, for the return of the White House Correspondents’ Gala Dinner, Saturday night in Washington, where Joe Biden made humor while pointing at Russia.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a prestigious Washington gala, made its return, without masks, on Saturday, April 30, in the U.S. capital after the pandemic and the Trump years, when the president’s self-deprecation and support for the press were not really in fashion. About 2,600 people in formal wear, journalists and their guests, attended at the Washington Hilton.

“I’m very pleased to be here tonight with the only group of Americans whose approval ratings are lower than mine,” Democratic President Joe Biden began his speech with humor.

Biden then took a more serious tone, paying tribute to the journalists covering the war in Ukraine and warning about the poison that is spreading through our democracy…with disinformation on the rise.

You, the free press, are more important than you have ever been in the last century, he stressed. Then, turning the floor over to the master of ceremonies, comedian Trevor Noah, he quipped, Trevor, the really good news is that now you get to take the piss out of the president of the United States, “And unlike in Moscow, you’re not going to jail.”
