Two-Year-Old Baby Absorbs Caustic Soda

Must Read

A two-year-old baby was admitted to Victoria Hospital, Candos on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 22. The baby and his brother were staying with their mother’s aunt in one of the NHDC apartments at Camp Levieux, Rose-Hill and were playing in the kitchen. At some point, the baby absorbed a quantity of the caustic soda. He was taken to the hospital after his mother gave him milk to relieve his pain.

It was around 1pm on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 22 that the child was taken to the hospital by his mother. A little earlier, he accidentally ingested caustic soda. The mother was talking with one of her aunts in a room when the child arrived crying and had a red and drooling tongue.

Immediately, his mother had to go to the kitchen to prepare milk for him to relieve his pain and then she found a bottle of lye on the floor. She suspected that her son had absorbed the contents of that pint.

After receiving a stomach enema, the baby was admitted to the ward. His condition is considered stable.

An investigation has been initiated into the exact circumstances of this case of harmful substance absorption.
